Meet Jesus

IS THERE A GOD OUT THERE?

A lot of people say, “I’m not going to believe in God until I see him.” Others say, “Sure, there may be a God out there somewhere but who knows what he is like?” Why all this talk about God, what’s the use of it all?

We can ignore the whole subject if we want to and many people do, continuing to go about their daily lives. But the question still remains, if there is a God, what will this mean when I pass from this life? Can I know Him and know that I will spend eternity in heaven with Him? The Bible says that God created this world, and that all the animals, people and natural resources of this world belong to him. If he made people who know how to talk, do you think God knows how to talk? Sure he does, and he has been trying to tell the people of this world the truth about Himself from the very beginning of man’s existence even to this very day.

Do you think people who believe in God are crazy? Isn’t it funny that doctors and lawyers, teachers and farmers, housewives and car mechanics, senators and salesmen, that there are people in every walk of life who not only believe in God but say with sincere, heart-felt conviction that they walk and talk with God and that they really know Him personally? Do you think they are all crazy? No, the truth of the matter is that they have all discovered something that is real. They believe that God is real. Did you ever stop to think how they can believe in God if they have never seen Him? God has changed their lives. At one point or another every person who sincerely has a relationship with God and who believes seriously enough to tell someone else about their discovery, was searching to find more in life and was seeking to know more of the truth. Any person with a searching heart who is looking for the answer to life, for life’s meaning and for true happiness, and who is not afraid to consider that there may be a God and that truth may be found in the Bible, is on his way to discovering God. But your search must be honest and you must be open to the truth. There is a God and he loves you. I know that it is true and so do many others. He wants you to discover him and to find a new life which will satisfy the hunger and thirst you have for true happiness.

WHO IS JESUS?

Sometimes we get the idea that Jesus walked softly, talked softly, and was generally speaking a “heavenly minded,” religious type of person. Also, we think of him as a kind of philosopher or moral teacher who was really not very much different than other religious fanatics in history.

First of all, Jesus was not a weak or soft type of person. Until about the age of thirty his work was carpentry. After that, for three years he walked all around the country of Israel, from town to town, up and down hills, preaching that men and women everywhere must turn back to God and that he had come from God to show people the way back to God. Sometimes he got angry, at times he strongly rebuked the religious leaders of his day, calling them hypocrites, blind fools, snakes, and children of hell, and on one occasion he overturned the tables of those who were buying and selling in the Jewish temple and with a whip drove the oxen and sheep and the people doing their money changing business out of the temple.

Also, Jesus was not just a moral teacher. He said things like, I have come from heaven, I was with God before the world was made, I am the Son of God, and I am coming back to earth and will execute judgment upon this world. (John. 6:38; John. 17:5, Mark 14:61,62;John. 22,26,27; Matthew 24:29-31).

In a book by C.S. Lewis titled “Mere Christianity,” Lewis says this about Jesus, “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him (Jesus): ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher, he would either be a lunatic--on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

Now, what do people say about Jesus Christ today? Some say he walked about from town to town doing good. He helped the sick by healing them and he fed people who were hungry. If anyone is lonely or in trouble he said that we should make an effort to help them. Well, it sure does seem like he was a good teacher because he not only taught good, moral living but he practiced what he preached, too.

People are willing to talk about moral teachers who were an example to mankind of goodness and who were trying to show us how to change our world for the better. These types of people can be an inspiration to us all. But serious talk about Jesus bothers us and scares us because we know down deep inside that he was more than just another inspiring man. Did he say that he was the Son of God and that he came down from heaven? He sure did. Did he have the gall to say that people who don’t believe in him would go to hell? He sure did. Did he also call people to follow his example and to follow and believe in his teachings? Yes, but even more than that he said that anyone who did not follow Him would go to hell. He said that he was the only way to the Father, that any other door was the wrong door. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life and that no one could come to God, the Father except through Him.” Jesus wants us to know him, have his Spirit in us and he wants to guide us every day in a personal walk with him. All this kind of talk makes us very uncomfortable, not because we think that he was crazy, but because we fear that his life was too much like God for his words to be a lie. We’re afraid to talk about him too seriously because we’re so afraid that his strong message to the world was true.

We might say, “But the Bible was written so many years ago, and it has too many errors, or why would anyone in our modern, 21st century America want to believe in a poor preacher who lived in an obscure, eastern country 2,000 years ago?” “Why would anyone want to make a fool out of himself by telling someone else that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died, rose from the dead, and that he still changes lives today?”

Well, I am one who is willing to be “a fool for Christ” because I know that Jesus lives in heaven right now, he answers my prayers and he has changed my life so that I want to follow him. I want to obey his teachings and tell the whole world that he is the one true answer to man’s search for happiness. I know that Jesus is alive because he has manifested himself to me. It says in the Bible, “You shall seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (speaking of God) (Jeremiah 29:13). I am not ashamed to tell the world that Jesus is real and He is alive. And he is ready and willing to make himself real to you. He loves you, he is wanting to walk with you, and one day, you will be with him forever in heaven.

JESUS WILL COME INTO YOUR LIFE

When I heard people talking about Jesus, these people really seemed to know Him and their lives seemed to be changed by Him, it seemed like Jesus was really living in them and speaking through them. So, I listened to what they had to say. Then, I became convicted in my heart that I did not know Jesus and that I was not saved. I became hungry to know Him too, if he was for real—was God really out there? Could I know Jesus, too? So, I prayed a simple prayer, “God, I don’t know if you are real or if you can hear me but if you are out there, come into my life, save me, make yourself real to me.” That’s when Jesus came into my life—I met Jesus—I started my walk with the Lord. I became born again. I became a real Christian.

The Lord will come into your life too, as the Holy Spirit speaks to your heart and you turn to God in prayer. Just pray like I did or in your own words but REALLY MEAN IT when you say, “I want to know you Lord. I know I have done bad things, forgive me. I repent. I believe your blood was shed for my sins. I believe you died and rose again for me. Save me, Lord." God will hear you, from that moment of your sincere prayer, He will begin to change your life. He’s waiting for you and watching over you and now he is drawing you to Himself. God bless you.
